South Africa Travel Guide: Entry Rules for Americans, Where to Go, Best Time to Visit, and Staying Safe
Visa-free for 90 days on a U.S. passport, seasons flipped from North America, malaria only in the northeast, and the arrival habits that matter most at the airport.

- 90 days visa-free on a U.S. passport
- 63 million people, per Statistics South Africa
- 15,000 road deaths a year, per French officials
South Africa is an easy country to enter and a big one to plan. Americans get 90 days without a visa, but seasons are flipped from North America, the safari country of the northeast carries a malaria risk the Cape does not, and the first hour after landing is when official advisories ask for the most care.
This guide draws on South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs visa list, the CDC’s South Africa page (reviewed August 25, 2026), the French foreign ministry’s detailed advisory (updated September 29, 2026), and Statistics South Africa’s population estimates. Our sources were rechecked on October 21, 2026.

South Africa entry requirements for U.S. citizens
South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs lists U.S. passport holders as exempt from visas for stays of up to 90 days. Beyond that, the details that trip people up concern the passport itself:
- Blank pages: the French foreign ministry’s advisory says passports need at least two blank pages and must remain valid 30 days past your planned departure, or travelers are turned back on arrival. Confirm the current wording on the State Department’s South Africa page before you fly.
- Your entry stamp: check that the date written on it matches the stay you were granted. Overstaying can lead to a ban on returning for one to five years.
- Kids traveling alone: unaccompanied minors need English-language copies of their birth certificate, parental consent letters, the parents’ IDs, and a letter from the adult receiving them in South Africa.
- Yellow fever: not required when flying in directly from the United States, per the CDC. It is required if you arrive from, or spend more than 12 hours in transit in, a country with yellow fever risk, which matters if your trip also includes Kenya or Ethiopia.
Best time to visit South Africa: southern-hemisphere seasons
Seasons are flipped from North America: the southern winter runs from June through August and summer from December through February, and rainfall patterns differ from one region to the next. For month-by-month rain and temperatures, check the South African Weather Service, the national forecaster.
Time difference: South Africa stays on UTC+2 all year with no daylight saving time. That puts it 6 hours ahead of New York while the East Coast is on daylight time, and 7 hours ahead in winter.
Where to go in South Africa: six regions for a first trip
We have city guides for three of these stops. The Cape Town guide was rebuilt in October 2026; Johannesburg and Durban are next in line.
Cape Town and the Peninsula
South Africa’s legislative capital and seat of Parliament. French officials advise hiking Table Mountain and Lion’s Head in a group, never alone, and staying out of the water at Diaz Beach near the Cape of Good Hope because of strong currents. Our Cape Town guide covers neighborhoods and sights.
Kruger National Park
Kruger spreads across Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces and lies inside a malaria zone. Near the Phabeni and Numbi gates on the Hazyview side, the French advisory warns about robberies by fake police cars and says to avoid driving there after dark.
Johannesburg and Soweto
South Africa’s largest city and the main international gateway, through O.R. Tambo airport. For Soweto, the French advisory recommends organized tours or visits limited to the Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu houses and the Hector Pieterson Museum. See our Johannesburg guide.
The Drakensberg
KwaZulu-Natal’s uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park became a World Heritage Site in 2000; in 2013 the listing was extended to Lesotho’s Sehlabathebe National Park as Maloti-Drakensberg. Its rock shelters hold thousands of paintings made by the San people.
Durban
A major city on the Indian Ocean, with the Golden Mile beachfront. The French advisory urges caution on the waterfront at any hour. See our Durban guide.
For a Kruger day safari from Johannesburg, a guided Soweto visit, or a Cape Peninsula drive, the button below opens our partner GetYourGuide’s South Africa listings. On a Kruger trip, look at the scheduled return time: official advice is to stay off rural roads after dark.

Is South Africa safe? What to do at the airport and in cities
Check the State Department’s current advisory level for South Africa before you book. The French foreign ministry, whose advisory goes into street-level detail, rates crime as very high, including in wealthy suburbs and downtown areas, while noting that most visitors who follow basic precautions travel without trouble. Its arrival advice is the most practical:
- Johannesburg O.R. Tambo: land in daylight if you can, take the Gautrain to Johannesburg or Pretoria (daily, 4:50 a.m. to 9:20 p.m.) rather than the road, skip the airport ATMs and currency counters, and turn down any taxi you did not book.
- Cape Town International: order a ride through a secure app, ignore people in the terminal holding up an app’s name, and if you drive, stay on the N2 highway without stopping instead of following GPS onto back roads.
- In town: do not walk around after dark, visit townships only with a guide, and use ATMs inside malls or bank branches during the day.
- Cards: keep your card in sight; the server should bring the payment terminal to your table.
At the beach, winds and currents shift fast and drownings are common. On the Cape Peninsula, Shark Spotters watches several beaches, including Muizenberg: a red flag means a shark was seen within the past two hours, and a white flag with a siren means one is close to shore.
Driving in South Africa and getting between regions
Traffic drives on the left, which takes extra attention at intersections and traffic circles. Ask your rental company whether it requires an International Driving Permit alongside your U.S. license. The legal alcohol limit is 0.05% blood alcohol content, and checkpoints are frequent.
- Night driving: avoid it outside cities; lighting is poor and road work is badly signed.
- Gas: in remote areas, stations are far apart and some take cash only, so refill at half a tank.
- Rail: the Gautrain is the line officials consider safe in the Johannesburg area; the older Metro line to Pretoria is not recommended.
- Domestic flights: Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban all have international airports, and South African carriers operate to international safety standards, according to the French advisory.
Malaria, rabid seals, and travel insurance for South Africa
The CDC recommends prescription malaria prevention for Kruger National Park, the Ehlanzeni District of Mpumalanga, the Mopani and Vhembe districts of Limpopo, and the uMkhanyakude District of KwaZulu-Natal, along the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Cape Town and the Garden Route are not on its list. The CDC also wants all international travelers fully vaccinated against measles.
Cape fur seals: the CDC reports a rabies outbreak among seals in South Africa and Namibia. Do not approach or touch them, even if a tour operator says it is safe, and get medical care right away after any bite.
Private hospitals are good but very expensive, and the French advisory warns that foreign patients without proof of payment or insurance can be turned away, even in an emergency. Our partner SafetyWing Nomad Insurance lists up to $250,000 for medical treatment and a $100,000 lifetime maximum for medical evacuation; check eligibility on its quote page. Readers living in Europe can also look at Chapka Cap Assistance.
Reader perk: new SafetyWing customers who choose Nomad Essential, billed every 28 days or yearly, get 8 weeks of the Electronics Theft add-on with the code ADVISEDTRAVELER. Click the pink camera icon on the Nomad Insurance page and enter the code before you create your account. After those 8 weeks, the add-on renews as a paid option.
Phone service in South Africa: have data when you land
A working phone is part of the official arrival advice: you need it to book a ride through an app and to double-check your GPS route away from the airport. Ask your U.S. carrier what its international plan costs, or install an eSIM before leaving. Our partner Yesim sells a South Africa eSIM; confirm that your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, and check coverage if you are headed to Kruger or the Drakensberg.
Where to stay in South Africa: pick a base by region
Cape Town works for the Peninsula and the start of the Garden Route, Johannesburg for Kruger, and Durban for the Drakensberg. The map below starts on Cape Town; search for Johannesburg, Durban, or Knysna in its box to move it.
Compare places to stay across South Africa, with prices and reviews
Wine country: if you book a night on a Stellenbosch wine estate, the French advisory suggests asking about on-site security and not going out after dark.
