Where is it warm in June? June is one of the best months for the Mediterranean: rain all but disappears and the sea warms quickly, to around 75 to 77°F in Antalya, Cyprus and Rhodes and 73°F in Crete, Malta, Mallorca and Croatia, with afternoons of 77 to 87°F and peak-season crowds still a few weeks away. Farther afield, the Southern Hemisphere dry season begins in Bali, Tahiti, Zanzibar and Mauritius. Closer to home, the Caribbean and Mexico are hot but entering the rainy and hurricane season.

The eastern Mediterranean warms fastest. A month earlier, none of these seas topped 70°F.
1. Turkey: Antalya
87°F in the afternoon, 67°F at night, 0.4 in of rain over 3 days, sea around 77°F.
The warmest sea on this list in June. The Turkish Riviera combines big beach resorts, the old town of Kaleiçi and ancient sites such as Perge and Aspendos, often at lower prices than Greece.
Good to know: the heat climbs to 94°F in July. June is the best balance of warm water and bearable sightseeing.
2. Cyprus
Larnaca: 87°F in the afternoon, 68°F at night, 0.1 in of rain, sea around 75°F.
The sea warms about 5°F in a month and rain disappears. English is widely spoken, and Paphos, the Troodos villages and the beaches of Ayia Napa combine easily by car.
Good to know: they drive on the left in Cyprus. Visit ancient sites early in the morning.
3. Greece: Rhodes
83°F in the afternoon, 68°F at night, 0.1 in of rain, sea around 75°F.
The warmest water of the Greek islands on this page, with milder heat than Cyprus. The medieval old town and Lindos bay are still comfortable to explore.
Good to know: from mid-May to mid-September, a steady north wind called the meltemi blows over the Aegean. East-coast beaches such as Lindos are usually more sheltered.
Sea around 73°F: Crete, Malta, Mallorca, Corfu and Croatia
The heart of the Mediterranean. In May these seas were 64 to 66°F; in June they gain about 7°F while afternoons stay in the low 80s.
4. Greece: Crete
Heraklion: 81°F in the afternoon, 66°F at night, 0.1 in of rain, sea around 73°F.
Crete is big enough for several stays: Chania and the lagoons of Balos and Elafonissi in the west, Heraklion and Knossos in the center. In June the island is dry without August’s crowds.
Good to know: Balos and Elafonissi are reached by car or boat. Arrive early, parking fills fast from June.
5. Malta
Luqa: 82°F in the afternoon, 65°F at night, 0.1 in of rain, sea around 73°F.
English-speaking, compact and almost dry in June. Valletta, the Three Cities and boat trips to Gozo and Comino fill a week easily.
Good to know: sandy beaches are few on the main island. For swimming, head north to Mellieħa or out to Gozo and Comino.
6. Spain: Mallorca
Palma: 83°F in the afternoon, 60°F at night, 0.5 in of rain over 3 days, sea around 73°F.
The southeastern coves, such as Cala Mondragó, are still reachable without the summer crush, and the Serra de Tramuntana is good for hiking and scenic drives.
Good to know: nights are still cool, about 60°F in Palma. The island fills quickly from July.

7. Greece: Corfu
Kerkyra: 82°F in the afternoon, 62°F at night, 0.6 in of rain over 5 days, sea around 73°F.
The greenest Greek island, with a Venetian old town and coves on the west coast. The Ionian Sea is less exposed to the meltemi than the Aegean.
Good to know: early June can still bring a few storms, the reason the island stays so green.
8. Croatia: Dubrovnik and Split
Dubrovnik: 77°F in the afternoon, 66°F at night, 1.9 in of rain over 7 days, sea around 73°F. Split: 80°F, 2.0 in, sea around 72°F.
The Dalmatian coast is ideal in June, between Dubrovnik’s walls, Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the islands of Hvar and Korčula.
Good to know: the wettest stop in this section, mostly as short storms. Cruise ships call at Dubrovnik: visit the old town early or in the evening.
The Atlantic: sun without the heat
The Atlantic barely warms between May and June. These are picks for 72 to 78°F afternoons without the eastern Mediterranean’s heat, with cooler water around 70°F.
9. Portugal: the Algarve
Faro: 78°F in the afternoon, 60°F at night, 0.3 in of rain over 4 days, sea around 70°F.
Strong sun, very long days and dramatic cliffs around Lagos and the Benagil sea cave. Easy to combine with Lisbon.
Good to know: the ocean stays around 70°F all summer here. Farther north, Lisbon’s water is only about 66°F.
10. Canary Islands and Madeira
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 78°F in the afternoon, 67°F at night, almost no rain, sea around 70°F. Funchal: 72°F, 62°F at night, 0.5 in.
The most temperate islands on this page: no heat waves, mild nights and almost no rain. Great for hiking in Madeira or on Mount Teide.
Good to know: for water above 75°F, head to the eastern Mediterranean instead.

South of the equator, June opens the driest stretch of the year, with seas of 77 to 82°F.
11. French Polynesia: Tahiti
Tahiti-Faa’a: 84°F in the afternoon, 70°F at night, 2.4 in of rain, sea around 81°F.
The Polynesian dry season begins. Tahiti has nonstop flights from the US West Coast, and Moorea is a short ferry ride away, Bora Bora a domestic flight.
Good to know: overwater bungalows on Bora Bora sell out early for June to August. Moorea offers more choice at lower rates.
12. Indonesia: Bali
Denpasar: 89°F in the afternoon, 74°F at night, 2.1 in of rain over 6 days, sea around 82°F.
June opens Bali’s best season: rain halves from May, the heat eases slightly and the sea is the warmest on this page.
Good to know: July and August are the most in-demand months. June is less crowded and usually cheaper.
13. Tanzania: Zanzibar
84°F in the afternoon, 71°F at night, 5 rainy days on average, sea around 81°F.
Zanzibar comes out of the long rains of April and May: rainy days drop from 15 in May to 5 in June. It pairs easily with a safari on the Tanzanian mainland.
Good to know: the east coast around Paje is windier in June. The north, at Nungwi and Kendwa, is more sheltered for swimming.
14. Mauritius
Port Louis: 82°F in the afternoon, 68°F at night, 0.9 in of rain over 4 days, sea around 77°F.
The Mauritius Meteorological Services count June to September as winter: dry, sunny and mild, with half the rain of May.
Good to know: the sea cools to about 77°F and nights drop to 68°F. The west coast is the most sheltered from the trade winds.

- Thailand, the Maldives and Sri Lanka: monsoon season. Phuket gets 9.3 in over 19 days, Malé 6.6 in.
