Praia, Cabo Verde: The Plateau, a Day Trip to Cidade Velha and the EASE Airport Fee
What to see in Cabo Verde’s capital, how U.S. travelers handle the pre-registration and fee, and the safety rules that apply to Praia specifically.

- 30 days visa-free for U.S. citizens
- Level 2 for Praia within a Level 1 country
- 2009 UNESCO listing for Cidade Velha
- About 2 mi from the airport to downtown
Praia sits on the south coast of Santiago Island, Cabo Verde. Its historic core, the Plateau, is a 37-acre bluff above the harbor that the country put on UNESCO’s Tentative List in 2016. A short ride west, Cidade Velha preserves the remains of Ribeira Grande, which UNESCO describes as the first European colonial town built in the tropics.
Entry rules and safety advice here come from the State Department’s Cabo Verde page, with details from France’s foreign ministry (updated October 13, 2026) where the U.S. page is silent, such as the fee amount. Site facts come from UNESCO and Cabo Verde Airports.

Do U.S. citizens need a visa for Cabo Verde?
Not for stays of 30 days or less. You do have to register and pay an airport security fee, either online on the EASE portal (ease.gov.cv) up to five days before arrival or on arrival. The State Department does not list the amount; France’s foreign ministry gives 3,400 Cabo Verdean escudos.
- Passport: valid six months beyond your intended stay, with one blank page.
- Yellow fever: a certificate is required if your flight arrives from Senegal or another West African country.
- Cash limit: up to 1,000,000 escudos (about $10,600) in or out.
Nelson Mandela International Airport is about 3 km (roughly 2 miles) northeast of downtown, according to Cabo Verde Airports.
Is Praia safe? Level 2 inside a Level 1 country
Cabo Verde as a whole is at Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (advisory of December 18, 2025), but the State Department rates Praia at Level 2 for crime: pickpocketing, purse snatching, mugging, armed robbery and assault.
- Don’t walk alone at night, and skip the hillside stairways.
- Don’t physically resist a robbery.
- Roads are often unlit and driving at night is dangerous; the State Department also advises avoiding buses and commuter vans.
Good to know: the U.S. Embassy is at Rua Abilio Macedo 6 in Praia. Main line +238-260-8900; after-hours emergencies +238-991-3325.
Things to do in Praia: the Plateau
The old town stands on a naturally fortified bluff, Santa Maria da Vitória, with a grid laid out in the early 1800s. Praia became the real seat of government in 1770, the permanent capital in 1855 and a city in 1858, according to the Tentative List file submitted to UNESCO.
- Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, the main square, with city hall and the church.
- Presidential Palace and Palace of Culture.
- Ethnographic Museum; we found no official hours or admission fee online.
- Jaime Mota Barracks, the former military quarters on the bluff.
Day trip to Cidade Velha, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Listed in 2009 as “Cidade Velha, Historic Centre of Ribeira Grande,” the town lies on Santiago’s south coast, west of Praia. UNESCO calls it an essential platform of the Atlantic slave trade. Its listing mentions two churches, a royal fortress and Pillory Square, with an ornate 16th-century marble pillar.
Our partner GetYourGuide lists tours of Santiago Island from Praia. Since the State Department advises against buses and commuter vans, a tour with hotel pickup is the practical way to get there; read the cancellation terms too.

Beaches in Praia: strong currents, no lifeguards
Strong currents and undertows are common, especially outside tourist areas. The State Department suggests never swimming alone, staying within flagged zones and wearing water shoes against sea urchins and sharp rocks. France’s foreign ministry adds that beaches are unsupervised and there is no sea rescue service.
Best time to visit Praia
Rain is scarce and falls mostly from August to October, sometimes in heavy bursts. From mid-December to late March, the harmattan, a hot, dusty wind, can cut visibility and ground inter-island and international flights for several days, according to France’s foreign ministry. We found no official monthly climate averages for Praia, so there is no weather table here.
Where to stay in Praia
With walking at night off the table, stay close to what you want to see and plan on cabs after dark.
The Plateau
The main square, palaces, museum and pedestrian street are all on the bluff, which makes daytime sightseeing on foot easy.
Cidade Velha
A night here lets you see the UNESCO site early in the morning before heading back to the capital.

Money, travel insurance and phone data
The currency is the Cabo Verdean escudo (CVE). Not every business takes cards, and ATMs that accept U.S. cards are sometimes out of order or charge high fees, so carry some cash.
Medical capacity on the islands is limited, which is why France’s foreign ministry calls coverage for treatment and medical repatriation essential. Our partner SafetyWing Nomad Insurance shows eligibility and a quote online; readers based in Europe can compare Chapka Cap Assistance.
For data, our partner Yesim sells a Cape Verde eSIM to install before departure on an unlocked phone. Heading on to São Vicente? See our Mindelo guide.
