Australia Travel Guide for Americans: the ETA, Seasons in Reverse, and Nine Cities From Sydney to Alice Springs
How U.S. citizens get the Electronic Travel Authority, what to declare at the airport, the best time to visit Sydney, Darwin, and Uluru, plus beach, wildlife, and driving safety.

- ETA required for U.S. tourists, applied for in the Australian ETA app
- 17 in of rain in an average Darwin January, almost none in July
- A$38 for a 3-day Uluru-Kata Tjuta park pass
- 000 is the emergency number, not 911
The long flight is the easy part. Before you go to Australia, you need an ETA on your passport, a clear idea of what you can and cannot bring in, and a plan that fits the seasons: when it is winter in the U.S., Sydney is in summer and Darwin is in the middle of its wet season.
We built this guide from the State Department’s Australia page, the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, UNESCO, and Parks Australia, with notes from France’s foreign ministry where the U.S. page is silent. Our nine city guides, sorted by region below, cover what to see and where to stay in each place.

Do Americans need a visa for Australia? An ETA covers most trips
U.S. citizens need a valid passport plus either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA). According to the State Department (page updated June 2, 2025), an ETA is enough for tourism or business stays under 90 days, and you apply through the Australian ETA app or through your airline or travel agent. The passport must be valid when you enter and have one blank page for the entry stamp.
Do not overstay: the State Department warns that staying past your ETA or visa, even briefly, can lead to detention, removal, or being barred from coming back. The app shows the current fee before you pay.
Customs and biosecurity are strict on food, plants, wood products, and animals. France’s foreign ministry adds a rule of thumb for the incoming passenger card: if in doubt, declare it. Duty-free allowances are A$900 in general goods (A$450 for travelers under 18), 2.25 liters of alcohol, and 25 cigarettes or 25 grams of tobacco for adults; go over and duty applies to the whole category.
Where to go in Australia: our city guides by region
Distances are long, so it pays to pick a few regions and plan the flights between them. Each card links to our full guide for that city; Hobart’s has already been fully updated.
Sydney and the Blue Mountains
The Sydney Opera House has been on the World Heritage List since 2007, and the Greater Blue Mountains Area since 2000. Neighborhoods, beaches, and first-visit tips are in our Sydney guide.
Melbourne and Adelaide
The two big southern cities each have a guide: Melbourne and Adelaide. In the southern summer, check the state’s bushfire alerts before heading out of town.
Brisbane
On the east coast between Sydney and Cairns, Brisbane gets its own write-up in our Brisbane guide.
Cairns, the Great Barrier Reef, and the rainforest
Two World Heritage sites are reached from Cairns: the Great Barrier Reef, listed in 1981, and the Wet Tropics of Queensland, listed in 1988. The State Department lists jellyfish, crocodiles, and sharks among the hazards in Australian waters, so ask locally before you swim. See our Cairns guide for the town itself.
Darwin and Kakadu
Darwin, in the Northern Territory, is the tropical city in the weather section below. Kakadu National Park has been a World Heritage Site since 1981. Our Darwin guide has the details.
Alice Springs, Uluru, and the Red Centre
Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, on the World Heritage List since 1987, is open all year, and park managers say the weather is coolest from May through September. Parks Australia lists A$38 per adult for a 3-day pass or A$50 for an annual pass, free under 18, sold online or at the entry station. Ayers Rock Resort is about a 10-minute drive from the entry station.
Alice Springs is the Red Centre’s other town; our Alice Springs guide covers what to do there and nearby.
Perth and Western Australia
Perth is the big city of Western Australia, the state that is also home to Shark Bay, a World Heritage Site since 1991. Start with our Perth guide.
Hobart and Tasmania
The Tasmanian Wilderness joined the World Heritage List in 1982. Tasmania’s capital has an up-to-date guide: visiting Hobart.
Reef trips out of Cairns, a day in the Blue Mountains, or a sunset tour at Uluru: the button below opens our partner GetYourGuide’s Australia listings. For Uluru tours, check whether the park pass is included in the price.

Best time to visit Australia: it depends on the region
Seasons run opposite to the U.S., but the bigger split is north versus south. In Sydney, Bureau of Meteorology records give an average January high of 79°F and a July high of 62°F, with rain spread through the year (about 48 inches annually). In Darwin, average highs stay near 87 to 92°F all year, and rain decides everything: over a foot a month from January through March, next to nothing from May through September.

Storms and fire: France’s foreign ministry puts the northern cyclone season from November through April, the same months as Darwin’s wet season. The State Department notes that bushfires, floods, and severe storms are common hazards and that smoke can make air quality poor during bushfire season.
Is Australia safe? Beaches, wildlife, and bushfires
The State Department’s advice for Australia is to exercise normal precautions. The real risks are natural ones: swim only between the flags where lifeguards are on duty, never swim or dive alone, and keep in mind that jellyfish, crocodiles, sharks, snakes, and poisonous insects can be dangerous. France’s foreign ministry adds that rip currents run on surf beaches and that shark risk applies to beaches without protective nets.
In an emergency, dial 000. For bushfires, follow the alerts of the state you are in.
Driving in Australia: left side, right-hand drive, long gaps between gas stations
Traffic keeps left and cars are right-hand drive. Whether you need an International Driving Permit with your U.S. license depends on the state or territory, the State Department says, so check the rules for each place you plan to drive and ask your rental company.
France’s foreign ministry strongly advises against night driving because of animals on the road, and warns that in the outback gas stations are very far apart and pavement can turn into dirt track. Plan fuel stops before you leave town.
Health and travel insurance for Australia
No vaccinations are required for entry from the U.S., the State Department notes. Mosquito-borne dengue has no cure, France’s foreign ministry points out, so pack repellent for the tropical north, along with sun protection everywhere.
Check with your insurer whether your U.S. health plan pays for care in Australia, and how a medical evacuation home would be covered. Our partner SafetyWing offers Nomad Insurance Essential; read the limits and exclusions on its plan page before you buy. With the code ADVISEDTRAVELER, first-time SafetyWing customers get 8 weeks of the Electronics Theft add-on free on Nomad Essential 28-day subscriptions or annual plans: click the pink camera on the Nomad Insurance page and enter the code before creating your account. After 8 weeks, the add-on renews as a paid option.

Australian dollars, cash rules, and phone data
Prices are in Australian dollars (A$). Cash of more than A$10,000 must be declared on arrival and departure. At the airport on the way out, the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) lets visitors claim back the goods and services tax (GST) and the wine equalisation tax (WET), according to France’s foreign ministry.
For data, our partner Yesim sells an Australia eSIM; compare it with your carrier’s international plan, and make sure your phone is unlocked and eSIM-ready. Download offline maps before any outback drive.
Where to stay in Australia: one base per region
With domestic flights linking regions that are far apart, book a base for each leg (Sydney, Cairns, Yulara or Alice Springs, Melbourne) rather than one hotel for the whole trip. The map opens on Sydney; type Cairns, Melbourne, or Yulara in its search box to move it.
