Best area to stay in Cairns for first-timers
Downtown, along the Esplanade
The downtown waterfront has the free Esplanade Lagoon and the council’s Esplanade fitness facilities. Base yourself here if you want to join organized reef and rainforest trips without a car and still swim during stinger season.
- Best for: a first trip built around reef days, no rental car.
- Swimming: the lagoon rather than the ocean.
The Northern Beaches: Palm Cove, Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach
These beach communities are among those where Cairns Regional Council posts lifeguards. You trade city convenience for a quieter, oceanfront stay with patrolled swimming.
- Best for: couples and families planning beach time.
- Getting around: plan on a rental car or tour pickups to reach town and the reef boats.
- Keep in mind: November to May, swim inside the stinger enclosures; beaches can close.

Where to swim in Cairns, and how to handle stinger season
The Esplanade Lagoon downtown is a 4,800-square-meter (about 52,000 sq ft) saltwater pool that’s free and open year-round, according to Cairns Regional Council. On the coast, the council staffs lifeguards at Ellis Beach, Palm Cove, Clifton Beach, Kewarra Beach, Trinity Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Holloways Beach and Bramston Beach.
Stinger basics: the Queensland Government says marine stingers are around all year, with the highest risk from November to May. Swim inside stinger nets where they exist (the council notes they aren’t fully stinger-proof), consider a full-body Lycra suit, and if someone is stung, pour vinegar on the sting and call 000 for an ambulance. The State Department adds: swim only between the flags where a lifeguard is on duty.
Are there crocodiles in Cairns?
Queensland’s environment department (DETSI) is clear in its December 2024 Crocwise campaign: no body of water in Croc Country can be considered crocodile-free, and crocs also swim in the ocean. Its rules for visitors:
- obey every warning sign, and assume a waterway may hold crocodiles even without one;
- take extra care near water at night;
- stand back from the edge when fishing, and never wade in for a snagged lure;
- report sightings on the QWildlife app or at 1300 130 372.

The Wet Tropics of Queensland, a World Heritage rainforest
UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee inscribed the Wet Tropics of Queensland in 1988 under all four natural criteria. For hikes and drives, the State Department points U.S. travelers to the Wet Tropics Management Authority’s visitor guide.
ETA, travel insurance and phone data for U.S. visitors
U.S. citizens need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA); for tourism under 90 days, the ETA is enough and is requested through the Australian ETA app or via an airline or travel agent. Your passport must be valid on arrival with at least one blank page, per the State Department page last updated June 2, 2025, which advises travelers to exercise normal precautions in Australia.
