Kenya’s main coastal city traces its history to the 12th century, according to the Kenya Tourism Board. Its Swahili Old Town sits beside a 16th-century Portuguese fort, and protected coral reefs lie off the beaches to the north.

Is it safe to travel to Mombasa right now?
Mombasa is not in any of Kenya’s “Do Not Travel” areas, but the whole country moved from Level 2 to Level 3 (“Reconsider travel”) on October 19, 2026, which the State Department attributes to health risks. The advisory points to the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, which WHO declared a public health emergency of international concern on May 17; Kenya is not among the affected countries it lists.
Do Not Travel on the coast: Lamu County, Tana River County (except Tsavo National Park), Kilifi County north of highway C103, and coastal areas north of Malindi, all for kidnapping and terrorism. Recheck the advisory and enroll in STEP shortly before you leave.
Do Americans need a visa for Kenya? The eTA
You need an approved Electronic Travel Authorization before you start your trip, children included. It replaced Kenya’s e-visa on January 5, 2024, and is issued only through the official portal, etakenya.go.ke. The Embassy of Kenya in Washington gives a processing time of three working days and says the eTA is valid for travel within 90 days of issue.
- Passport: valid 6 months beyond your arrival date, with 2 blank pages (State Department).
- To apply: a selfie or passport photo, your flight itinerary, a hotel confirmation and a payment card.
- Yellow fever: proof of vaccination is required if you arrive from a country where the disease is endemic.
Fort Jesus and Mombasa Old Town
The Portuguese built Fort Jesus between 1593 and 1596 to guard the harbor, to plans by Italian architect Giovanni Battista Cairati. UNESCO listed it in 2011 as one of the best-preserved examples of 16th-century Portuguese military architecture; the protected site covers about 5.8 acres including the moat.

Mombasa beaches and the marine national park
Mombasa Marine National Park, gazetted in 1986, fully protects about 4 square miles of reef inside a marine reserve of about 77 square miles where regulated fishing is allowed. The Kenya Wildlife Service lists snorkeling and diving; boats leave from beach gates including Nyali, where the park headquarters sits.
Park fees: KWS sets conservation fees for nonresidents and revises them periodically. Check its current schedule before your boat trip rather than relying on a price quoted by a beach operator.
How to get from Nairobi to Mombasa
The Madaraka Express runs from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa Terminus. Kenya Railways’ published timetable (March 2025 document) shows three daily departures each way, at 8 a.m., 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., taking about 5 to 6 hours. Confirm times when you book.
Flights from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta or Wilson airports land at Moi International Airport. By road it is about 300 miles, and the State Department warns that the Nairobi-Mombasa highway is only two lanes, with minibuses (matatus) a major hazard.

Medical care and travel insurance
