Douala, Cameroon: Visa and Yellow Fever Rules, Safety, Things to Do and Where to Stay

Most trips to Douala start with paperwork: Americans need a visa issued before departure and proof of yellow fever vaccination. On the ground, the main safety rule is simple: plan your moves, including the airport run, for daylight hours.

Do Americans need a visa for Cameroon?

Yes. The tourist-visa checklist of the Embassy of Cameroon in Washington, D.C., lists a $93 fee for stays of one day to three months, payable by money order or cashier’s check, and a processing time of seven business days. You can apply no earlier than 90 days before arrival. The checklist carries no issue date, and France’s foreign ministry now points travelers to Cameroon’s official e-visa portal (evisacam.cm), so confirm the current procedure with the embassy before you send anything.

  • Passport: valid at least six months beyond the visa’s expiration date.
  • Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate showing yellow fever (fièvre jaune or Stamaril) is required; infants under one are exempt.
  • Also on the list: two passport photos, a flight reservation (buy the ticket once the visa is issued) and a bank statement or a legalized invitation letter.

Is Douala safe for tourists?

Read the U.S. State Department’s current Cameroon travel advisory before you book and again before you fly. France’s foreign ministry, in its map updated March 5, 2026, places the Littoral region around Douala at its “heightened vigilance” level, below the regions it advises against: the Far North, the North-West, the South-West, the Bakassi Peninsula and areas along the borders with Nigeria, the Central African Republic and Chad.

After dark: the same advice strongly discourages road travel at night, lists the Yaoundé-Douala highway among dangerous routes, and says to avoid taxis from nightfall, especially alone, because muggings in taxis are common. In big cities it also reports bag snatching, assaults and burglaries, and recommends a guide for low-income neighborhoods and popular markets.

Things to do in Douala: public art and the port museum

It commissions public art made with local communities and curates exhibitions on social justice, the environment and cultural identity. Its best-known project, SUD (Salon Urbain de Douala), places artworks in the city’s public spaces; the Dutch Prince Claus Fund honored it in 2009.

The Maritime Museum of Douala displays art objects, archives and plans, and tells part of the story of Cameroon’s main port city, including the history of the National Council of Shippers of Cameroon, according to the Embassy of Cameroon in Egypt. Neither venue publishes hours or admission fees in the sources we read, so ask your hotel the day before.

France’s foreign ministry flags malaria (see a doctor about prevention before you go, and get any fever checked quickly, even weeks after returning), a cholera outbreak that has reached the Littoral region since it began in November 2021, and the need to drink only bottled, sealed or treated water. Day trips from Douala: Ekom Falls and Mount Manengouba

France’s advice names two Littoral sites with specific rules: visit Ekom Falls in a group and leave before nightfall, and ask your hotel to arrange an escort for the Manengouba mountains. Going within 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) of an oil platform is strictly prohibited.
