Livingstone is the Zambian gateway to Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “the smoke that thunders.” The town sits about 6 miles north of the Zambezi River and had 177,393 residents at the 2022 census.

When you go matters more here than almost anywhere: the same viewpoint can be lost in spray in April and show bare rock in October. Seasons, fees and entry rules below were checked on October 14, 2026.

When is the best time to visit Livingstone and Victoria Falls?

It depends on what you want to see. According to Wild Horizons, a Victoria Falls tour operator, flow peaks in April and bottoms out in November, and the Eastern Cataract on the Zambian side is usually dry by October.

Rain follows a different calendar from the river: the wet season runs from November to March, while the falls keep rising into April as water arrives from upstream.

Things to do in Livingstone: the falls, Devil’s Pool and the Livingstone Museum

Shared with Zimbabwe and on the World Heritage List since 1989, the falls stretch about 1,708 meters (roughly 5,600 feet) across. UNESCO puts the drops between 61 m (Devil’s Cataract) and 99 m (Rainbow Falls), or about 200 to 325 feet, with up to 500 million liters a minute pouring over at peak and a spray plume visible 19 miles away on the Lusaka road.

• Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park: Zambia’s tourism agency lists international entry at $10 per person per day in its 2025 fee table, “subject to change without notice.” The State Department notes that park fees can be paid in U.S. dollars.
• Livingstone Island and Devil’s Pool: tour operator Expert Africa says the island is normally reachable by boat from late June to early March, and the pool on the lip of the falls is swimmable only from late August to early January, both depending on river levels. Tongabezi runs the trips five times a day; they last about three hours with hotel transfers.
• Livingstone Museum: open to the public since 1934 and described by Zambia Airways’ in-flight magazine as the country’s oldest and largest museum, with archaeology, ethnography, history and a David Livingstone gallery. We found no official page with current hours or fees.

Before you book an adventure: the State Department lists white-water rafting and gorge swings as higher-risk activities, notes that operators are not consistently regulated, and says serious injuries usually mean travel to a major city for care.

Where to stay in Livingstone: town, riverfront or by the falls

Pick based on how you plan to get around. France’s foreign ministry reports attacks on tourists in the empty stretches between town and the Zambian side of the falls, while the falls site and the large hotels next to it are secured. We do not list rates because we could not verify any.

Getting to Livingstone: the airport, the road from Lusaka and the bridge to Zimbabwe

• By air: Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula International Airport is about 3 miles from town and 9 miles from the falls, according to Zambia Airports Corporation. It has domestic flights from Lusaka and international links including Johannesburg, Cape Town and Nairobi.
• By bus: the State Department says some buses of acceptable quality run between Lusaka and Livingstone.
• To Zimbabwe: the road crosses the Zambezi on the Victoria Falls Bridge, the way to the Zimbabwean side of the falls. Check Zimbabwe’s entry rules separately.

Don’t drive at night: the State Department calls night driving in Zambia extremely dangerous and notes there are no emergency services for stranded drivers. Plan intercity trips for daylight.

Zambia for U.S. travelers: entry, malaria and cash

• Visa: not needed for tourism stays of up to 90 days per calendar year. Overstays bring fines of roughly $100 to $1,200, payable before you leave.
• Passport: at least six months of validity past your arrival date and at least three blank pages, plus two consecutive blank visa pages if you transit South Africa.
• Health: malaria incidence is high and the State Department recommends preventive medication for all travelers; tap water is not safe to drink. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you arrive from, or spend more than 12 hours in an airport of, a yellow fever country.
• Money: ATMs are common in Livingstone but absent in national parks; use machines inside banks or secure malls. Major hotels and large supermarkets take cards, but terminals go offline, so carry cash. Everyday purchases are in kwacha.
• Advisory: Level 1, “Exercise normal precautions” (issued July 31, 2023; guidance updated September 3, 2026), with petty crime common in tourist areas.
