How to get from Madrid-Barajas Airport to downtown
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas sits about 7 miles (12 km) from the city center. Turespaña, Spain’s national tourism agency, lists four ways in:

Is Madrid’s tourist transit pass worth it?
The CRTM tourist ticket gives unlimited rides on public transit for 1 to 7 days. Zone A covers the city; zone T reaches the whole region. According to both the CRTM and esMADRID, it also waives the €3 fee at the airport Metro station, which makes it a good first purchase if you arrive by Metro and ride more than twice a day.
- Zone A: €10.30 for 1 day, €17.50 for 2, €23.10 for 3, €43.20 for 7.
- Zone T: €15.40 for 1 day, €26.20 for 2, €35 for 3, €62.80 for 7.
- Kids: half price under age 11.
What it doesn’t cover: the airport express bus in zone A, and AVE, Avant and regional Renfe trains. Buy it in the Tarjeta Transporte app or at Metro ticket machines.
Prado Museum hours, tickets and free entry
The Prado is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. General admission is €15. It closes on January 1, May 1 and December 25, and shuts at 2 p.m. on January 6, December 24 and December 31.
Free hours: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 5 to 7 p.m. on Sundays and holidays, per esMADRID’s page updated May 27, 2026. Expect the line to form before the free window opens.
The works the tourism office singles out include Velázquez’s Las Meninas, Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights and Goya’s The Third of May 1808. The nearest Metro stops are Banco de España (Line 2) and Estación del Arte or Atocha (Line 1).
A short walk south, the Reina Sofía displays Guernica in its Sabatini building, as part of the permanent collection. It is closed on Tuesdays. visitmadrid.es lists free entry from 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Sundays; the museum publishes its full rates.
Retiro Park and the UNESCO-listed Paseo del Prado
UNESCO lists the Paseo del Prado and the Buen Retiro gardens together as “a Landscape of Arts and Sciences,” a site of about 200 hectares (roughly 490 acres) that also takes in the Royal Botanical Garden, the Jerónimos neighborhood and the Cibeles, Neptune and Apollo fountains.
The park itself covers more than 125 hectares (over 300 acres) and is free to enter. visitmadrid.es points visitors to the Crystal Palace, the Great Pond with its Alfonso XII monument, the rose garden and the Fallen Angel fountain. Rowboats on the pond rent from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., no booking needed.
Visiting the Royal Palace of Madrid
With 3,418 rooms, the Royal Palace is billed by visitmadrid.es as the largest royal palace in Europe. Plan on about 45 minutes for the main rooms, including the Throne Room, the Royal Chapel and the Royal Armory. A combined ticket adds the Gallery of Royal Collections next door.
Hours vary by season: generally 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in winter and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer, according to Patrimonio Nacional as quoted by visitmadrid.es. We don’t list a price here; check Patrimonio Nacional’s official ticket office when you book.

Summers are hot and dry, winters cool. At the Retiro weather station, AEMET’s 1981-2010 normals put the July average high at 90°F with half an inch of rain, while January ranges from 37 to 50°F. October is the wettest month at 2.4 inches. May and September, with highs in the 70s, are the most comfortable months for walking between sights.

Where to stay in Madrid for a first trip
Staying near Atocha puts you at the end of the 203 airport bus and on the C-1 and C-10 trains, within walking distance of the Reina Sofía, the Prado and Retiro Park. Near the Royal Palace, you start the day at the palace and the Gallery of Royal Collections, on the opposite side of downtown.
