Essaouira, known to Europeans for centuries as Mogador, is a walled port on Morocco’s Atlantic coast laid out in the 18th century for Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdallah. About 83,000 people lived there at the 2024 census.
Most visitors arrive from Marrakech, and the first decision is whether to come for the day or stay the night. The other surprise is the wind: steady trade winds keep summer highs in the low 70s and make a jacket useful year-round. Facts below were checked on October 14, 2026.

Is Essaouira worth a day trip from Marrakech?
It works if you accept a long day. The towns are about 109 miles apart, and Wikivoyage puts the bus ride at roughly three hours each way, which leaves five or six hours on the ground: enough for the ramparts, the harbor and a walk through the souks.
What you give up is the evening. Sunset over the sea wall at Place Moulay Hassan and a quiet morning at the fish market both need a night in town. Two nights also leave time to walk the beach south to Diabat.
What to see in Essaouira’s UNESCO-listed medina
UNESCO added the medina to its World Heritage List in 2001, calling it an outstanding, well-preserved 18th-century fortified seaport with a strong European influence. Its walls follow the model of Vauban, the French military engineer; Wikipedia credits the design to Théodore Cornut, who ran the works for 12 years from 1760.
- Skala de la Kasbah: the seafront ramparts, still lined with old cannons, facing the Atlantic.
- The harbor and Skala du Port: blue wooden fishing boats and the fish market at the west end of the medina, with the sea wall at Place Moulay Hassan as the usual sunset spot.
- The Mellah and Bayt Dakira: in the old Jewish quarter, Bayt Dakira opened in 2020 as a center for Judeo-Moroccan heritage, combining a museum, the Simon Attias Synagogue and a research center on relations between Judaism and Islam.
- Bab Doukkala and the souks: the eastern gate opens onto the markets. UNESCO lists metal engraving and Gnawa music among the town’s living heritage.
No official hours online: we could not find opening hours or ticket prices for Bayt Dakira or the ramparts on an official site. Ask your riad or check on arrival.

Essaouira beach: wind, kitesurfing and Mogador Island
The long town beach runs south from the medina to the village of Diabat. Strong winds and currents often make it a poor place to swim or sunbathe, and an excellent one for kitesurfing and windsurfing; Wikivoyage also points riders to Sidi Kaouki, farther south.
Swimming: France’s foreign ministry warns that most Moroccan Atlantic beaches have no lifeguards, drownings are frequent, and the surf zone stays dangerous even when the sea looks calm.
Offshore lie the Iles Purpuraires, the largest of which is Mogador Island, about a mile out. Phoenicians and later Romans used them, the Romans to make purple dye from murex snails. They have been a protected Ramsar site since 2005, and landing requires official permission, so most people see them from the ramparts or the beach.
What to wear in Essaouira
Pack layers, and more of them than for Marrakech. Average highs never pass the low 70s, even in August, and the wind on the ramparts and beach makes it feel cooler. January nights average about 52°F.
- Any month: a windbreaker, a sweater for the evening, sunglasses for blowing sand.
- In town: modest clothing that respects local customs. Mosques are closed to non-Muslims.
- At the beach: France’s foreign ministry suggests a one-piece swimsuit.
- During Ramadan: alcohol cannot be bought or drunk in public.

Temperatures barely move: highs around 65°F in January and 72 to 73°F from July through October. Rain falls mostly from November to January, about 2 inches a month, and almost none from May to September. The yearly total is under 12 inches.

The Gnaoua and World Music Festival has run every year since 1998, usually in the last week of June, and Wikipedia cites crowds of around 450,000. The 27th edition took place June 25 to 27, 2026, according to TelQuel; 2027 dates had not been announced as of October 14, 2026. Book early if your trip overlaps.
Where to stay in Essaouira: a riad in the medina or a hotel on the beach
Inside the walls you walk everywhere but cars cannot reach your door; along the beach you trade atmosphere for parking and quick access to the water. We do not quote rates because we could not verify any.
Inside the medina: riads near the ramparts
Guesthouses a few minutes’ walk from the harbor and the Skala. Ask your host which gate the taxi should use and whether someone can meet you there with your bags.
Along the beach, south of the walls
Easier with a rental car or kite gear, with the medina a walk away along the waterfront.

- Bus from Marrakech: Supratours leaves from its office next to Marrakech’s train station and stops near the beach by Bab Marrakech; CTM leaves from the main bus station or its Gueliz office. Wikivoyage says seats often sell out, so buy the day before.
- Grand taxi: hire the whole car or buy one seat in a shared taxi, which leaves once all six seats are taken. Agree on the fare before you get in.
- From the airport: Essaouira-Mogador Airport is 4 to 5 miles from town. The airport authority’s page lists no public bus, and we found none on an official source, so plan on a taxi or a pickup arranged by your riad.
Driving: the State Department rates Moroccan road conditions and driving practices as poor and accidents as a serious risk. Factor that in before renting a car for the drive from Marrakech.
Morocco for U.S. travelers: passport, safety and insurance
- Entry: no visa for stays of 90 days or less. Your passport needs at least six months of validity on arrival and one blank page per entry stamp. Overstaying without an extension means appearing before a judge before you leave.
- Advisory: Morocco is at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism, in the advisory issued September 4, 2026. The State Department also flags pickpocketing and bag snatching in tourist areas.
- Water: stick to sealed bottled water and skip the ice.

How many days do you need in Essaouira?
Two nights cover the medina, the harbor and the beach at an easy pace. A day trip from Marrakech is possible but means about six hours on the road.
What is the weather like in Essaouira in February?
Mild and breezy: average highs near 66°F, lows near 54°F, and about 1.5 inches of rain for the month.
Can you swim at Essaouira beach?
You can, but wind and currents often make the water rough, and most Atlantic beaches in Morocco have no lifeguards. It is better suited to kitesurfing.
How do I get from Essaouira airport to the medina?
By taxi or a pickup booked through your hotel. The airport is 4 to 5 miles out and we found no official public bus.
Can you visit Mogador Island?
Not on your own. The islands are a nature reserve and landing requires official permission.
