Tetouan sits at the foot of the Rif mountains, about 25 miles south of the Strait of Gibraltar and 37 miles by road from Tangier. UNESCO calls its medina one of the smallest in Morocco and “indisputably the most complete.”
We pulled together what to see, where to stay and how to get there from UNESCO, Morocco’s national museums foundation and the State Department, all checked on October 15, 2026.

Is Tetouan worth visiting?
Yes, if you like old cities more than big sights. The medina, listed in 1997, was rebuilt by refugees expelled from Andalusia after the Reconquista and grew mostly between the early 1600s and late 1700s. Its walls run about 3 miles with seven gates, and the main streets still link gate to gate past craft quarters, mosques and old caravan inns.
Outside the walls, the Ensanche, built under the Spanish protectorate (1913-1956), gives the city a second, very different center. Most visitors need one full day; two if you add the beach at Martil or a trip to Chefchaouen.
Is Tetouan safe for tourists?
The State Department has no Tetouan-specific warning; Morocco as a whole is at Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism, in an advisory dated September 4, 2026. France’s foreign ministry, which maps restricted zones in detail, limits them to the far south (the Mauritanian border and off-road Western Sahara).
Photo etiquette that matters here: Tetouan has a royal palace right by the medina. The State Department advises against photographing palaces, government buildings and diplomatic missions.
Things to do in Tetouan
- The medina and the Mechouar: the royal palace square, once called al-Feddan, opens just outside one of the medina entrances. A walking tour with a local guide is the easiest way to find your way through the lanes on a first visit.
- Bab El Oqla Museum: in the gate of the same name on the east side of the medina, reopened in January 2022 by the National Museums Foundation. It covers the city’s history from its 15th-century rebuilding, including the Squndo, a 16th-century water system.
- Archaeological Museum: built in 1943, about 100 yards from the royal palace, with Berber, Phoenician, Roman, Jewish and Arab finds.
- Arts and crafts: UNESCO singles out the Dar Sanaa school of traditional crafts and the National Institute of Fine Arts. The Centre of Modern Art opened in November 2013.
Hours and prices: we found no official opening hours or admission fees for these museums. Ask at your hotel before planning a day around one.

Where to stay in Tetouan
Inside the medina
Best for walking everywhere. Lanes are pedestrian, so ask your host which gate to use with luggage.
The Ensanche (Spanish quarter)
Built around the large circular Plaza Moulay el Mehdi, a short walk from the medina gates. Better for conventional hotels and easier taxi access.
Martil, on the coast
The nearest beach to Tetouan. A summer option if you want the sea and don’t mind a ride into the medina.

How to get to Tetouan from Tangier, Ceuta or by air
There is no train: Morocco’s Al Boraq high-speed line ends at Tangier, about 37 miles west, and the rest of the way is by road. Our Morocco travel guide covers the train. If you’d rather not arrange transport, a day trip from Tangier with a local guide includes the ride.
- From Ceuta (Spain): the road runs through Fnideq to the Bab Sebta border crossing.
- By air: Sania Ramel Airport, run by Morocco’s airports authority, is about 4 miles east of the city and has flights to Western Europe.

A caveat on the source: these normals come from Wikipedia’s climate table, which doesn’t name the weather service behind it, and its rainfall row has no clear unit, so we left rain out. The State Department notes flood risk in Morocco from October to March.
