Nepal: In the Heart of the Himalaya

Nepal is far more than just a trekking destination. It is a land of spirituality where Hinduism and Buddhism coexist in perfect harmony. From the bustling alleys of Kathmandu to the silent trails of the Annapurnas and the jungles of Chitwan, Nepal offers surprising diversity. It is a land of legends, yetis, and peaks that touch the sky.

Our Local Tip

“Namaste” (hands joined at heart level) is the universal greeting. Use it with a smile; it’s the key to connecting with Nepalis. On the mountain trails, always yield to porters and yaks on the mountain side of the path (never the cliff side!).

5 Good Reasons to Go

  • The World’s Highest Mountains: Seeing Everest or the Annapurnas with your own eyes is an unforgettable experience.
  • Cultural Richness: The royal squares (Durbar Squares) of the Kathmandu Valley are living museums.
  • The Kindness of the People: A resilient and incredibly welcoming population.
  • Diverse Activities: Trekking, rafting, jungle safaris, paragliding, and meditation retreats.
  • Spirituality: The peaceful atmosphere of monasteries and stupas invites deep reflection.

Papers

Valid passport (+6 months). Visa required (on arrival or online). Trekking permits (TIMS/ACAP) required for mountains.

Health

Routine vaccines up to date. Be careful with water and raw food. Watch out for Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Budget

Nepalese Rupee (NPR). Very affordable destination, except for high-altitude climbing permits.

The Himalayan Climate

Choosing the right season is crucial for trekking:

  • Autumn (October-November): The peak season. Clear skies, unobstructed mountain views, pleasant temperatures.
  • Spring (March-April): Second best season. Rhododendrons are in bloom, temperatures rise.
  • Winter (December-February): Cold, especially at altitude, but skies are often clear. Ideal for lower valleys and Chitwan.
  • Monsoon (June-September): Rain, leeches, obstructed views. Avoid for trekking, except in Mustang (rain shadow area).

Getting Around & Sleeping

Transport

Roads are often rough and slow. Use tourist buses for major routes. Domestic flights (small planes) connect to trek starting points (Lukla, Jomsom).

Accommodation

Comfortable hotels in cities. On treks: “Teahouses” (lodges) are basic but cozy. Camping is only necessary for remote, off-the-beaten-path treks.

Time to Eat! Nepalese Flavors

Simple, nourishing cuisine, often vegetarian by default:

  • Dal Bhat: The national dish. Rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry. Served with free refills, it’s the ultimate trekker fuel.
  • Momos: Tibetan dumplings (steamed or fried) stuffed with vegetables or buffalo/chicken meat.
  • Thukpa: A hot and comforting noodle soup.
  • Tea (Chai): Spiced milk tea (Masala Chai), served everywhere, sweet and warming.
