Bhaktapur, Nepal: Durbar Square, Entry Fee and the Best Time to Visit

Bhaktapur, also called Bhadgaon or Khwopa, sits at the eastern end of the Kathmandu Valley, 7.5 miles from the capital. Its Durbar Square is one of the seven monument zones of the valley on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1979. The city had 79,136 residents at the 2021 census.

For the ticket, the layout and the entry rules we rely on the Nepal Tourism Board, UNESCO and the US State Department, checked on October 11, 2026. A detail taken from a collaborative guide or a private website is always identified as such.

Best time to visit Bhaktapur: weather by month

October through March is the dry stretch: under 1.8 inches of rain a month, with afternoon highs from 67 to 81 °F. The monsoon runs from June through September, with 8 to 15 inches a month over 15 to 23 rainy days. Winter nights are cold, near 37 °F in January.

These rounded figures are the 1991-2020 climate normals for Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, at 4,386 ft, the closest reference station we found. Bhaktapur is slightly higher. The table comes from Wikipedia, which cites the World Meteorological Organization and Nepal’s weather service. A rainy day has at least 0.04 inch of rain.

• Monsoon: the State Department warns that rains from June to September can cause flash floods and landslides that block roads.
• Air quality: it describes air pollution as a significant problem in Nepal’s major cities, especially from December through April.
• Festival: Bisket Jatra, the city’s main festival, falls around April 14 with the Nepali New Year. In 2026 it lasted nine days.

Day trip from Kathmandu or an overnight stay?

Both work, and the facts that decide it are short. Bhaktapur is 7.5 miles east of Kathmandu, and Wikivoyage puts the bus ride at 40 to 60 minutes. The four squares of the old city are covered on foot.

If you have two days in Kathmandu, that makes Bhaktapur a half-day or full-day outing. Wikivoyage also notes that the city is close to the international airport and suits a first night in Nepal. It adds that the entry ticket can be made valid for several days on request, a detail from 2016 that we could not confirm.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square entry fee

Foreign visitors pay $18 or 1,800 Nepali rupees (NPR) to enter Bhaktapur Durbar Square, according to the Nepal Tourism Board. Wikivoyage describes the ticket as an entrance fee to the city, sold at its gates.

• Children: free at Durbar Square under age 10.
• National Art Museum: closed on Tuesdays. A camera costs NPR 100 extra. The ticket also covers the woodcarving museum and the brass and bronze museum on Dattatreya Square.
• Hours: the tourism board does not publish any.

Where the sources disagree: the tourism board’s fee page carries no date and says its figures come from the departments concerned. The website bhaktapur.com, run by residents, lists $15 instead of $18 for the same NPR 1,800 ticket. Bring rupees or small dollar bills and check the posted price at the gate.

Places to see in Bhaktapur: the four squares

The old city is organized around four squares: Durbar Square, Taumadhi Square, Pottery Square and Dattatreya Square. Buses stop near the Siddha Pokhari pond, the tourism board notes. Rickshaws, tuk-tuks and taxis are not allowed inside the old city, according to Wikivoyage.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square

The former royal square holds buildings from the 13th to the 18th century, the tourism board says. The Golden Gate, the entrance to the palace, was made between 1751 and 1754, and the large bronze Taleju Bell dates from 1737. The National Art Museum is on the square.

The Palace of 55 Windows is dated to the 15th century by the tourism board, and to the late 17th or early 18th century by Wikipedia. The April 2015 earthquake badly damaged the square and destroyed the Vatsala Devi temple. The sources we read do not say how far its reconstruction has come.

Taumadhi Square and Nyatapola Temple

Nyatapola Temple stands 108 feet (33 m) tall under five roofs. King Bhupatindra Malla had it built between December 1701 and July 1702, and it survived the earthquakes of 1934 and 2015. It is dedicated to Siddhi Lakshmi, a Tantric goddess, and its inner sanctum is closed to the public.

Next to it, Bhairavnath Temple is a three-story pagoda. It was razed by the 1934 earthquake and renovated in 1995, Wikivoyage reports.

Pottery Square

Bhaktapur is a pottery center. On this square, pots are shaped and then set out to dry in the sun, Wikivoyage describes. Painted black-clay masks of deities are sold around town as well.

Dattatreya Square and the Peacock Window

Dattatreya Temple was built during the reign of Yaksha Malla (1428 to 1482). The Pujari Math, a former palace, now houses a woodcraft and bronze museum. The Peacock Window, dated to about 1750, is the best-known carved window in the city.

Two more landmarks: Siddha Pokhari, a pond of 574 by 249 feet near the bus stop, and juju dhau, a buffalo-milk yogurt that is the city’s signature food.

Getting to Bhaktapur from Kathmandu and the airport

Bhaktapur lies 7.5 miles (12 km) east of Kathmandu on the Arniko Highway, the road that leads to the Chinese border, according to the tourism board. We found no official bus timetable or fare published online.

• By bus: Wikivoyage describes minibuses and buses from a stop near Bhadrakali in Kathmandu to the Kamal Binayak and Chyamasingha stops, plus an express bus from Bagbazar. Allow 40 to 60 minutes.
• By taxi: fares are usually negotiated in advance, the State Department notes. It also mentions Pathao as a widely used ride app. Wikivoyage counts about 10 miles from the Thamel district.
• From the airport: visas on arrival are issued at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. None of the sources we checked gives a distance or fare from there to Bhaktapur.
• Driving: traffic keeps to the left. The State Department describes roads as poor and advises against road travel at night outside major cities.

Near Bhaktapur: Changu Narayan and Nagarkot

• Changu Narayan Temple: on a hilltop 2.5 miles north of Bhaktapur according to Wikivoyage, 4 miles according to Wikipedia. It is one of the valley’s seven UNESCO monument zones. Its Garuda statue dates to the 5th century, and the temple was rebuilt in 1702 after a fire. Microbuses leave regularly from Bhaktapur, the tourism board says.
• Nagarkot: 11 miles northeast, at 7,201 feet. It is known for sunrise and sunset views of the Himalayas. Some visitors walk from Nagarkot to Changu Narayan and return by way of Bhaktapur.
• Thimi: a Newar town between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, known for pottery and mask-making.

Where to stay in Bhaktapur: pick your square

Lodging in the old city means guesthouses close to the squares. Because taxis do not enter, plan to walk the last stretch with your bags. The locations below come from Wikivoyage.

Beyond the guesthouses, Hotel Heritage presents itself as a Newari-style boutique hotel with hand-carved wooden windows and furniture and a restaurant, Kutumba. Its website does not say how far it is from the squares.

Is Bhaktapur safe? Advisory, visa and entry rules

The State Department rates Nepal Level 2, “Exercise increased caution in Nepal due to natural disasters,” in an advisory dated September 4, 2026. That is one step above the lowest of the four levels.

• Earthquakes: they can strike with little warning, including in the Kathmandu Valley, where Bhaktapur is located.
• One area at Level 4: the advisory says not to travel to the Rasuwagadhi, Timure and Syafrubesi area of Rasuwa District, after a flash flood and landslide on August 26, 2026.
• Crime: generally low. Pickpocketing and bag-snatching occur in crowded tourist spots.
• Demonstrations: common and unpredictable. Avoid them.

Visa for US citizens: a visa on arrival is available at Tribhuvan International Airport: about $30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days and $125 for 90 days, payable in US dollars. The State Department warns that the process may take several hours. Your passport must be valid six months beyond arrival, and tourists may stay no more than 150 days in a calendar year.

In an emergency: dial 100 for the police, 1144 for the tourist police and 102 for emergency medical services. The US Embassy in Kathmandu answers at +977-1-423-4000, including after hours. Reread the Nepal travel advisory shortly before you leave.

Health, water and travel insurance

• Water and food: tap water is often unsafe, the State Department says. Bottled water is generally safe, and raw fruits and vegetables can cause illness.
• Medical care: hospitals in Kathmandu are generally better than elsewhere but can be crowded and often require payment before treatment.
• Insurance: Medicare and Medicaid generally do not cover care abroad. The department strongly recommends medical evacuation insurance.
