Cuba Travel Guide: Salsa, History, and Dream Beaches
From colonial Havana to the mogotes of Viñales: An island frozen in time.
Cuba: The Island of Passion
Cuba is a fascinating enigma, seemingly frozen in time yet vibrant with life. It is the rumble of vintage American cars on the Malecón, the scent of cigars and rum, and music drifting from every open window. But Cuba is also nature at its most exuberant: from the green valleys of Viñales to the blinding white sands of Varadero and the Cayos. Traveling here requires a little patience, but the reward is immense: an authentic encounter with a resilient, cultured, and incredibly warm people.
Our Experience
To experience the real Cuba, stay in “Casas Particulares” (private homestays). They are far cheaper than state hotels, often more comfortable, and crucially, they are the best way to understand the Cuban reality over a hearty breakfast with your hosts.
5 Reasons to Pack Your Bags
- Havana: Faded yet sublime Spanish colonial architecture, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- The Beaches: Varadero, Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo… miles of white sand and turquoise water.
- Viñales Valley: Unique karst landscapes (mogotes) and the world’s finest tobacco plantations.
- The Music: Salsa, Son, Rumba… music is the soul of the country, present in every bar and on every street corner.
- The History: From the Revolution to the footsteps of Hemingway, Cuban history is passionate and omnipresent.

Stress-Free Logistics
Direct flights from Europe/Canada. US flights are available (under specific authorized categories).
Valid passport + Tourist Card (Visa) + Mandatory Insurance. US Travelers: “Support for the Cuban People” is the most common category.
No mandatory vaccines. Important: Bring a full medical kit (painkillers, stomach meds, etc.) as pharmacies are often empty.
Cash is King! Bring plenty of Euros or USD. US cards do not work. ATMs are unreliable.
The Climate Puzzle
Tropical climate: hot and humid, with a distinct wet season.
- Dry Season (November to April): The best time to visit. Pleasant temperatures (77°F/25°C), little rain. High tourist season.
- Wet Season (May to October): Hotter (86°F+/30°C+) and humid. Frequent but short showers. Hurricane risk peaks in August-September.
- Shoulder Season: May and June offer a good compromise before the intense summer heat.
Insider Secret
For cigar aficionados, February is the month of the “Festival del Habano.” It’s the perfect time to visit plantations and factories in full swing.
Getting Around & Sleeping
Transport
Viazul buses for inter-city travel (book in advance). “Colectivos” (shared taxis) are very practical. Car rentals are expensive and can be complicated (fuel shortages).
Sleeping
“Casas Particulares” are essential for authenticity and value. Large state-run hotels are often overpriced for the quality provided.
Food & Drink
Simple but flavorful Creole cuisine, based on rice, beans, and meat.
- Ropa Vieja: The national dish. Shredded beef in tomato sauce, peppers, and onions.
- Lobster: Often very affordable and delicious, grilled or “enchilado” (in sauce).
- Moros y Cristianos: Rice mixed with black beans, the universal side dish.
- Mojito & Daiquiri: Cuban rum cocktails are legendary (and taste better here!).
