From the dunes of the Empty Quarter to the Nabataean wonders of AlUla: a destination in full metamorphosis.

40 Nature Reserves
10,000+ Archaeological Sites
1,100+ Miles of Coastline

Saudi Arabia: A Historic Opening

Long closed to tourism, Saudi Arabia is opening up to the world and revealing unsuspected treasures. Beyond the clichés, it is a land of striking contrasts where futuristic skyscrapers in Riyadh stand alongside traditional coral houses in Jeddah. It is the sheer awe of facing the monumental tombs of Hegra in AlUla—Petra’s little-known sister—and the serenity of the turquoise waters of the Red Sea. A trip to Saudi soil is a deep dive into a hospitable culture, proud of its past and resolutely turned towards the future.

Our Experience

Don’t miss “The Edge of the World” (Jebel Fihrayn) near Riyadh. Standing on the edge of this dizzying cliff facing the vastness of the desert puts everything into perspective. Plan for a 4×4 and a local guide to access it safely.

5 Reasons to Pack Your Bags

  • AlUla and Hegra: A UNESCO-listed Nabataean archaeological site, as impressive as Petra but without the crowds.
  • The Red Sea: Some of the best-preserved coral reefs in the world, a paradise for diving and snorkeling.
  • Cosmopolitan Jeddah: Its historic Al-Balad district and modern corniche offer a unique cultural blend.
  • The Majestic Desert: Experience absolute silence in the dunes of the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) or the canyons of Wadi Disah.
  • Hospitality: Saudi welcome is legendary, marked by Arabic coffee (gahwa) and dates offered generously everywhere.

Where to Stay?

From vibrant metropolises to millennia-old oases, here are the key stops.

Saudi Arabia Desert AlUla

Logistics (Stress-Free)

Flights

Direct flights from major hubs (London, NYC, Dubai) to Riyadh or Jeddah. Saudia offers excellent service.

Documents

Health

No specific vaccinations required. Hydration and sun protection are essential.

Budget

Currency: Saudi Riyal (SAR). It is a relatively expensive destination, comparable to Western Europe.

The Climate Puzzle

The desert climate dictates the rules. Choosing the right time is crucial.

  • Winter (November to March): The best season. Mild temperatures (68°F-77°F) ideal for visiting Riyadh and the desert. Nights can be cool.
  • Summer (May to September): Extreme heat (104°F-122°F). Avoid unless visiting high-altitude cities like Abha or Taif which remain cooler.
  • Shoulder Season: April and October can be pleasant, but the thermometer climbs quickly.

Our Tip

For a unique experience, aim for the “Winter at Tantora” festival in AlUla during winter. Candlelit concerts amidst the rocks and hot air balloons at sunrise are magical.

Getting Around & Sleeping

Transport

Car rental is recommended for freedom (roads are excellent). Domestic flights are almost essential given the distances (e.g., Riyadh-Jeddah = 1h30 flight). Uber and Careem apps work very well in cities.

Accommodation

Luxury hospitality is highly developed in Riyadh and Jeddah. In AlUla, the glamping or desert resort experience is incredible but expensive. Book early!

Let’s Eat! Local Specialties

A generous, spiced, and communal cuisine to share.

  • Kabsa: The national dish. Rice fragrant with spices (cardamom, saffron, cinnamon) served with chicken or lamb.
  • Mutabbaq: Stuffed pancake (meat, eggs, vegetables), delicious as a snack on the go.
  • Jareesh: Crushed wheat cooked slowly with yogurt and spices, very traditional.
  • Dates & Arabic Coffee: The unavoidable welcoming ritual. The coffee is light, cardamom-scented, and served without sugar.
