Ecuador: Small Country, Giant Adventure

Ecuador is often described as a microcosm of South America. In just a few hours of driving, you can travel from the lush Amazon rainforest to the snow-capped peaks of Andean volcanoes, and end up on the Pacific coast for sunset. And 600 miles offshore, the Galapagos Islands offer a wildlife spectacle unique on the planet—a true living laboratory of evolution. It is an easy country to travel through, with reasonable distances, delighting adventurers and culture lovers alike.

Our Experience

Don’t miss the Quilotoa Loop. This emerald-green crater lake is one of the most stunning landscapes in the Andes. You can hike down to the water’s edge or trek the entire rim (about 4-5 hours) for breathtaking views. It’s tough at high altitude, but absolutely worth it.

5 Reasons to Pack Your Bags

  • The Galapagos: Snorkeling with sea lions, walking beside giant tortoises, and seeing marine iguanas… an unparalleled wildlife experience.
  • The Avenue of Volcanoes: Cotopaxi, Chimborazo… ice giants perfect for hiking, climbing, or photography.
  • The Amazon: Easily accessible from Quito or Baños, offering a deep dive into the primary rainforest.
  • Colonial Cities: Quito and Cuenca, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, are jewels of architecture and history.
  • Diversity: Four distinct worlds in one single trip, with radically different cultures, climates, and landscapes.

Health

Yellow Fever vaccine recommended for Amazon. Watch out for altitude sickness (soroche) in the Andes.

The Climate Puzzle

Climate depends on altitude and region. There are no “real” seasons like in the US or Europe.

  • The Andes (Quito): Eternal spring, but nights are chilly. Dry season runs from June to September.
  • The Amazon: Hot, humid, and rainy year-round. Less rain in August/September and December/January.
  • The Coast: Hot and rainy season from December to May; dry and cooler season from June to November.
  • Galapagos: Warm season (Dec-May) is great for swimming; Cool season (Jun-Nov) is best for marine life activity.

Insider Tip

In Quito, the weather changes rapidly (“four seasons in one day” is the local saying). Dress like an onion—in layers—so you can adapt easily as the sun comes out or the clouds roll in!

Getting Around & Sleeping

Transport

The bus network is excellent and very cheap (roughly $1.50 per hour of travel). Domestic flights connect major cities. Uber works well in Quito and Guayaquil.

Sleeping

Historic haciendas in the Andes, eco-lodges in the Amazon, cool hostels… the variety is huge and offers great value for money.

Local Food & Drink

Hearty cuisine in the Andes, lighter seafood-based dishes on the coast.

  • Ceviche: Different from the Peruvian version, Ecuadorian ceviche is soupier and often served with popcorn and plantain chips (chifles).
  • Locro de Papa: A creamy potato soup with cheese and avocado. A delicious Andean comfort food.
  • Llapingachos: Potato patties stuffed with cheese, usually served with chorizo and a fried egg.
  • Cuy Asado: Roasted guinea pig. A traditional Andean delicacy—try it if you’re feeling adventurous!
