Norway Travel Guide
Majestic fjords, northern lights, and wild nature at the Arctic Circle.
Norway: The Call of the Great North
Norway is a destination that leaves a lasting impression with the sheer power of its nature. From the deep fjords of the west coast to the rugged Lofoten Islands, and across the Hardangervidda plateaus, the country offers grandiose landscapes. It is a land of contrasts, where bright midnight sun summers give way to polar winters illuminated by the northern lights.
Our Local Tip
In Norway, the “Allemannsretten” (right of public access) allows you to hike and camp almost anywhere, provided you respect the environment and stay more than 150m from dwellings. It’s perfect for reducing accommodation costs!
5 Good Reasons to Go
- The Fjords: Geirangerfjord, Nærøyfjord… landscapes unique in the world and UNESCO listed.
- Northern Lights: Tromsø and the north of the country are among the best places in the world to see them in winter.
- Hiking: Mythical trails like Trolltunga, Preikestolen, or Kjeragbolten.
- Lofoten Islands: A spectacular archipelago with mountains plunging into the sea and red fishing villages (Rorbuer).
- Quality of Life: The “Koselig” (cozy/warm) atmosphere and safety make Norway a very pleasant country to visit.
Where to Go?
From modern cities to isolated fishing villages.
Logistics (Stress-Free)
Fast direct flights from London and major European cities to Oslo. Allow more time for the North.
Schengen Area: No visa needed for US/UK/EU citizens for stays under 90 days. Valid passport required.
Excellent healthcare system. Travel insurance is recommended for non-EU residents.
Currency: Krone (NOK). Expensive. Card payments accepted everywhere (even for a coffee).
The Nordic Climate
Norway offers two very different faces depending on the season:
- Summer (June-August): Very long days (midnight sun in the north), mild temperatures. Ideal for hiking and fjords.
- Winter (November-March): Snow, long nights, northern lights, and winter activities (skiing, dog sledding).
- Shoulder Seasons (May/September): Good compromise, fewer crowds, but weather is more unstable.
Getting Around & Sleeping
Transport
Car recommended for freedom (watch out for numerous ferries). Oslo-Bergen train is spectacular. Domestic flights convenient for the North.
Accommodation
Quality hotels but expensive. “Hytter” (cabins) in campsites are very popular. Wild camping allowed (with rules).
Time to Eat! Local Flavors
Cuisine focused on the sea and nature:
- Salmon & Seafood: Absolutely fresh. Try the king crab in the north.
- Brunost: Brown cheese with a caramelized taste, a breakfast institution.
- Meat: Reindeer, elk, and lamb (“Fårikål”, the national dish).
- Lefse: Traditional potato flatbread, often served sweet.
- Waffles (Vafler): Heart-shaped, served with jam and sour cream.
